PPIC Dry Wells and New Wells

This spreadsheet contains data, sources, and methods used in the June 2024 policy brief “Drought and Groundwater Sustainability in California’s Farming Regions.”

This dataset includes summaries of reported household domestic well failures and newly drilled wells. Well failures are obtained from the California Department of Water Resources Dry Well Reporting System. Newly constructed wells are obtained from the Well Completion Reports dataset. Data includes 2012 through present (April 2024). It accompanies the June 2024 policy brief “Drought and Groundwater Sustainability in California’s Farming Regions.”

Each sheet gives counts of wells of different types (dry wells, new irrigation wells, new drinking wells, new monitoring wells, and new other wells), regions, and years.
